THE ASSOCIATION OF FERTILITY AWARENESS PROFESSIONALS (AFAP) exists to make sure that people can find high quality Fertility Awareness instruction in a context that supports their reproductive choices, their identities, and their relationships, whatever those may be. We do this through a two-pronged approach:
We are professionalizing the field by establishing uniform standards for educators, a code of ethics, and an international certification, and by providing peer support and ongoing education for Fertility Awareness Educators (FAEs) and those in training.
We are increasing access to instruction by maintaining a comprehensive list of highly qualified instructors, addressing barriers to widespread knowledge of Fertility Awareness, and participating in conversation with the public and with medical professionals.
Our members include FAEs, FAEs in training, and others who support Fertility Awareness and share our vision. Please see our membership page if you would like to join us!
We envision a world in which all people have the knowledge and power to make informed choices around their fertility, sexuality, and reproductive health, as well as healthcare providers who support their decision-making.
The Association of Fertility Awareness Professionals (AFAP) is a professional membership organization dedicated to
(a) unifying and strengthening the profession of Fertility Awareness education
(b) empowering people and communities by increasing access to quality sexual and reproductive health education and counseling.
Our Fertility Awareness Educators (FAEs) have taken different pathways to become qualified teachers but share a common core of competencies. We promote secular, observational Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FABMs). We provide education to all, irrespective of marital status, sexual orientation, or religion.
- To support FAEs (Fertility Awareness Educators) with professional membership, a code of ethics and standards, and resources for collegial involvement and continuing education.
- To ensure a standard of FAE education through an accreditation process for qualified training programs.
- To help the general public identify options for instruction in non-religious, observational FABMs by curating and disseminating a list of qualified FAEs.
- To serve as an informational resource for the media, health care professionals, and others by providing accurate, unbiased information about FABMs, and to participate in discussions about FABMs and related topics that take place in the public sphere.
- To enhance reproductive justice and cultivate diversity among users of FABMs as well as among FAEs by actively working to overcome barriers (e.g. racial, cultural, economic) and by expanding culturally-sensitive FA education.
